The Best Game He Never Scored In

I had just finished recording a set of guided visualization sessions and I wanted to know whether they did anything, so I tried one on a nine-year-old.He was our top scorer. Twenty-four goals in about seventeen games. The next closest player on the team had fourteen. He scored in almost every match, and in the first game of that season he had put in four.This was the last game of the year. I played him the audio in the car on the way, told him nothing about what was supposed to happen, and went to coach the game.He did not score.

Why that surprised everybody

Understand how unusual that was for this kid. He scored. That is what he did. Parents on the sideline expected it, the other team planned for it, and he had gone almost the whole season without a quiet afternoon.

So when the final whistle went on a tie and his name was not on the sheet, the obvious read was that he had an off day. Maybe the audio was a waste of twenty minutes in the car. Maybe it had thrown him off.

It was the best game he played all season and it was not close.

What I actually watched

He was quick. He was light on his feet in a way I had not seen from him before, and he was strong on the ball all afternoon.

But the thing that was different was his vision. He was seeing the field earlier. He was picking up runs before they happened. He looked like a player who already knew what was going to occur and was just waiting for everyone else to catch up.

Nine years old.

The pass

There was one moment that I still describe to players.

He received the ball near the sideline around midfield, facing away from the goal he was attacking. Two defenders were on his back. He shielded it and held them off, and then a third player came at him from the front, so now he is surrounded and he cannot see the goal.

His center midfielder started a run and called for it.

Without turning, he played the ball with his right heel, around and in front of his left foot, across his own body, and put it through. On target. Weighted right.

The midfielder ran onto it clean, one on one with the keeper, and scored the tying goal.

That was the pass of the season on that team, and it came off a kid who was in year four of his life being able to tie his own shoes.

What the stat line would have told you

Goals: zero. Shots: whatever it was. Nothing on that sheet says anything happened.

The assist is there if someone writes assists down for nine-year-olds, which mostly nobody does. And even if it is recorded, the word "assist" does not tell you he was facing the wrong way with three players on him.

If the only thing you had was the box score, you would have driven home thinking your kid had a bad game. His parents nearly did, and they were standing right there. They only knew otherwise because they saw it.

This is the whole problem with judging a young player on output. The number is not wrong exactly. It is just the least sensitive instrument you own, and it cannot detect the thing that actually got better.

What I think the visualization changed

I want to be careful here because I am one coach with one kid and one afternoon, and that is not evidence of anything.

But what I saw was not more effort and it was not more aggression. He was not trying harder to score. If anything he was calmer.

What changed was what he could see, and how early he could see it. Which is exactly what you would predict, because visualization is rehearsal. You are running the situation before the situation arrives, so when it arrives your brain is not solving it for the first time under pressure.

Mental imagery is one of the better supported ideas in sport psychology, but it is worth being honest about what it does. It improves the performance of things you can already do. It does not install a skill you do not have. It gets the skill out of you when it counts, which on that day meant a heel pass he would never have attempted if he had been thinking about it.

He went past what he had pictured. In his own head he already was that player, so the field just agreed with him.

How to actually do it with a kid

Two versions, both simple, and neither requires anything you have to buy.

The remembering version. Close your eyes and go back to a time you did the thing well. Not vaguely. What did it feel like in your legs, what did the ball feel like off your foot, who was on the field, what was the sound like, what was the weather. Get the feeling back, not just the picture.

The borrowing version. Pull up a clip of a player doing something you want to do, then put yourself in it. You are the one making the run. You are the one striking it. Get into it emotionally rather than watching it like a fan.

Five to ten minutes is plenty. Before a game works, and a proper pre-game routine is where it fits most naturally, but during the week is where the compounding happens.

If your kid did not score today

Ask them what they saw.

Not what they did, and not how many. What did they see, what did they notice earlier than usual, when did they know something was going to happen before it happened.

You will get a much more interesting answer than you get from "how did you play," and you will find out whether anything is actually developing in there. That question is also a lot kinder on a hard day, which matters for reasons that go well past soccer, and it pairs with what you say after a bad game.

The best game that kid played all season, he scored nothing. I would not have known it either if I had been looking at the sheet instead of the field.

Mental imagery is one of the more consistently supported techniques in sport psychology, with one important limit: it improves the execution of skills a player already has rather than teaching new ones. For a young player that is still valuable, because most of what goes wrong in a game is failing to produce something they can already do.

Keep it concrete and sensory. Ask them to remember a specific moment they played well and rebuild it in detail, what it felt like, what they heard, who was around them. Children are usually better at this than adults because they have not learned to feel self-conscious about it yet.

Both before a game and during the week. The pre-game version helps them arrive calm and ready to execute. The during-the-week version is where the real work happens, because you can rehearse a specific situation over and over without needing a field, a ball, or anybody else.

Five to ten minutes is plenty, and short and consistent beats long and occasional. A session that a kid will actually do three times a week is worth more than one they dread.

Drop the language around it and make it concrete. Do not call it visualization, just ask them to remember their best goal in as much detail as they can. That is the same exercise without the part that makes a twelve-year-old roll their eyes.
